The Enforcer
Version 1.01
March 3, 1990

1. Description:
"The Enforcer" is a program written to help you control the many applications
you have on your hard drive. Instead of having to remember all the various
run commands for a wide variety of programs, "The Enforcer" allows you to
enter them into a disk file which contains all the information needed to
load and run your programs.
"The Enforcer" is distributed as shareware or user-supported software. This
means that you are able to try the software without paying for it. The
shareware version of "The Enforcer" is distributed as a workable but limited
function program, in that you are only able to control 12 applications and
it does not allow for deletion of unwanted applications.
The shareware or non-registered version users are granted a limited license
to use "The Enforcer" for trial purposes and to copy the program for use by
others on a trial basis subject to the following limitations: 1) No fee,
charge, or other consideration is to be accepted other than a nominal charge
for a physical disk not to exceed $5.00. 2) This program is distributed as
is and the author is not responsible for any warranty or liability.
If you feel that "The Enforcer" is a useful program, you are able to order a
complete version for $20. An order form function is included in the program
for ease of ordering. The purchased version of "The Enforcer" is not a
shareware program and is protected by copywrite laws.
The purchased version has several enhancements over the shareware version.
* It allows for an unlimited number of applications instead of only 12. The
screen displays 24 applications at a time and the page up/down keys are
used to scroll from screen to screen.
* The delete function is operational as well as the add and modify. In the
shareware version, you are allowed to add and modify applications but not
delete them.
* After 4 minutes of inactivity on the menu screen, a screen saver function
blanks the screen and displays a moving reminder that "The Enforcer" is
still there but not visible.
* Less memory is required to keep "The Enforcer" resident. The shareware
version requires 60K or more. This overhead is greatly reduced in the
purchased version.
* The purchased version is serialized to the buyer. If the 'Print Order
Form' is performed, an order form is printed with your name and serial
number on it for reference. Any order which results from the printing
of your order form will result in a commission of 20% payable to you upon
receipt of the order. You can make money by selling this program to your
friends instead of giving them illegal copies.

2. How to Install "The Enforcer":
"The Enforcer" must reside in the root directory of the C drive. There are
several files which must be present to run the program.
ENFORCER.EXE ENFORCER.INS *
ENFORCER.ONE README.DOC *
ENFORCER.TWO INSTALL.BAT *
ENFORCER.FRM
ENFORCER.TXT
ENFORCER.DAT * needed only for installation
The ENFORCER.DAT file will not exist until you run the program the first
time and identify your applications.
To install "The Enforcer", an install.bat file has been provided. With
the master disk containing "The Enforcer" in drive A, type INSTALL .
This will copy all of the necessary files to the root directory of drive C
and add a line to the autoexec.bat file to allow "The "Enforcer" to run.
3. How to use "The Enforcer":
The first time you run "The Enforcer", a screen will be displayed with 24
boxes on it. All these boxes should be empty except for a letter at the
bottom. If the boxes are not empty, press F2 to exit to DOS and type
the following: ERASE ENFORCER.DAT . This will erase the data file. Now
type EXIT <CR> to return to the first screen. The boxes should be empty
now. Press F1 to enter the Maintenance Screen. This is the area where
you add and modify applications.
3.1 Adding an application:
You will note that there are Function Keys listed on the left side, an
Action Area to the right and a Message Area below that. Let's add an
application. Press F2 and notice that 3 lines appear in the Action Area
with instructions appearing in the Message Area. Follow the instructions
and enter a program name which is on your hard drive, such as BASIC. The
name can be up to 13 characters, upper and lower case. Don't worry about
centering it for appearance, the program does that for you. If you have
not typed 13 characters, press <CR>. The cursor moves to the next box. Now
enter the drive identifier and any sub-directories, such as C:\BASIC.
Notice that the :\ is automatically provided for the first sub-directory.
You must type it for deeper level sub-directories. You are allowed up to
29 characters for this line. If you have not typed 29 characters, press
<CR>. The cursor moves to the third line. Type the name used to run the
program, such as BASIC. You are allowed to add any runtime commands if
there are any, such as BASIC /M:21000 /F:5 to initialize Basic with the
highest memory location set at 21000 and 5 data files open. You are allowed
up to 29 characters for this line. If you have not typed 29 characters,
press <CR>. You are now asked if everything is correct. Answer yes. You
will now be taken back to the Application Select screen. If you had answered
N , you would be given the chance to correct the entry (see 3.2 below).
From the Application Select screen, Press A and the program should load
and run if you entered the correct information.

3.2 Modifying an application:
If you wish to make a change to an application which has been added to "The
Enforcer", press F4 - Mod Application. After you are asked what appli-
cation to mod, press <CR> . A list of all your applications will appear on
the screen. Select the application you want to modify or Z to exit. If
you selected an application, the same 3 boxes that appeared when you added
the application will now appear on the screen filled with all the data
associated with the selected application. You must re-type the entire line
if you wish to make a change or press <CR> if the line has no changes.
Continue through the next 2 fields, making changes or pressing <CR> as
required. After exiting the last field, you will be asked if everything is
correct. Answer Y. If you answered N , you would be returned to the first
field to begin again. If you answered Y , the new data will be saved and
you will be taken back to the Maintenance Screen. Press F5 to exit back to
the Application Selection screen.
3.3 Executing an application:
From the Application Select screen, press the letter associated with the
application you wish to execute. If the application data was correctly
entered, the application should load and run. If the message 'Invalid
Directory' flashes on the screen and you are taken back to the Application
Select screen, you probably entered the drivespec or filespec information
incorrectly. This can be verified and corrected as shown in 3.2 above.
Assuming the program executed properly, when you are ready to exit the
program, exit as you normally would. Upon successful exiting, you should be
back at the Application Select screen. Most programs will exit properly and
restart "The Enforcer". If for some reason, the Application Select screen
does not restart properly, you may have to re-boot the system. I would be
interested in knowing of any restart problems. The only one I have found
to date is exiting a program which had loaded a VGA driver and the restart
could not cope with it.
3.4 Exiting to DOS:
Pressing F2 from the Application Select screen will take you right into the
DOS environment. You may perform any function in DOS you wish. When you are
done, type EXIT to return to "The Enforcer".
3.5 Unloading "The Enforcer":
When "The Enforcer" is first loaded, it remains resident in memory. If you
have a program which requires all of you memory or it appears that there is
a memory conflict, you may remove "The Enforcer" by pressing F3 . When you
are ready to return to "The Enforcer", type ENFORCER at the C: prompt.
3.6 Printing an order form:
Pressing F7 on the Maintenance Screen will print an order form on you
attached printer. The program assumes your printer is attached to LPT1. If
your printer is attached to another port, you may have to issue a redirect
statement in DOS using the MODE command (ie MODE LPT1:=COM1:).
3.7 Reading Shareware information:
Pressing F6 on the Maintenance Screen will display information about the
shareware concept and "The Enforcer". If you have read this document, you've
already been told all you need to know.

4. Any problems?
If you have any problems with "The Enforcer", I may be reached by phone at
(407) 869-6098 any evening, Eastern time zone. I may also be reached by
mail at the address shown on the order form. This program has been tested
extensively on a variety of different applications. I would be interested
in hearing about any problems you encounter. It has been tested on IBM
compatible XTs, ATs, 286 and 386 machines with monochrome, CGA, EGA, VGA and
multisync monitors.
If the order form function is inoperable or you are unable to print the
order form, you may order directly by sending a check or money order for
$20.00 per disk plus Florida sales tax, if applicable, to:
David Clow
